Dave and I have been married for 12 years today!! We’ve been so busy that we completely forgot about our anniversary until 10:00 last night! A few months back, I asked Dave to fill out the same questionnaire that we have our couples do because I wanted to do something special with it but never got around to it. With Dave snoring by my side, I filled out my portion and posted our answers here for you. I can’t wait for him to read my answers. His made me cry and fall in love with him even more. If any of you would like to try this with your spouse, you can do it HERE. I HIGHLY suggest it. Especially if you aren’t feeling the sparks with each other. It’s so easy to get busy with life and kids and work that we stop looking at each other and forget why we are in it in the first place. So, without further ado…here’s a bit about us. Enjoy. 🙂
What did you first notice about your partner?:
A: I think I first noticed his red hair. I always had my eye out for redheads and so for me, he was easy to spot. The second thing that caught my “eye”, was that he genuinely cared about other people.
D: How tall and beautiful she was. She was energetic and fun. She would do something to make fun of me and then fall in a ditch or under my truck or into something. Then she would go red and run away. I loved every minute of it.
If you could have one character trait of your partners, what would it be and why?:
A: The ability to see everyone through the eyes of love. He finds something to love about every single person he encounters, and overlooks the bad. He also isn’t able to read body language or tone very well, so someone can be a total dirt bag to him and he doesn’t get it. I need some of that.
D: Efficient. I might get things done all the way to the end earlier.
What is one of the sweetest most romantic things your partner has ever done for you?:
A: There are so many to choose from…but one of my favorite things was when he was feeling really frustrated with me…and he wanted to change it…he wrote about 20 notes to me of things he loves about me and hid them all over the house for me to find throughout the day while he was gone. That was pretty amazing. (even if he did do it just to change the way HE felt about me! ha-ha!)
D: Threw a birthday party for me with my brothers and friends to play video games together and left us.
What stands out most about the moment of the proposal?:
A: We were in a yellow inflatable raft on my favorite lake from my childhood. He was wearing sunglasses and he got down on his knee the best he could and tried to pull out the ring but dropped it! He had some difficulty finding it, but finally did. When he popped the question, I couldn’t tell if he was serious or not because of the sunglasses and the fumbling, so it took me a minute to realize this was the real deal. I cried and said yes. He’s so awkward and it’s so cute.
D: I dropped the ring in the boat and I thought I dropped it in the water , but I found it and she cried when she said yes. I did it in a place that was special to her.
When do you feel most loved by your partner?:
A: When I am in the hospital. He still tells me how sexy I am and brings me stuff, like my favorite candy or a cupcake. I know that I stink and look like death, but in those moments I feel like the most loved woman in the world.
D: When she snuggles up to me and just wants to spend time with only me. When she talks to other people about me in a positive, uplifting way.
Does your partner have any hidden talents? If so, describe one of your favorites.:
A: He does perfect accents and impressions in his sleep! He’s AWFUL while awake, but something comes out of him in his sleep and it’s amazing. He once nailed the whole Billy Idol airplane intercom speech from Wedding Singer, word for word, impeccable accent, while snoozing.
D: When things get really tough she find strength that she doesn’t know about. Man, she is so beautiful when she pulls out the strength that she has. She is so brave.
What is most important to your partner?:
A: #1. God & Jesus Christ #2. Me #3. Our kids
D: Her family. She makes lists so she won’t forget anything. She doesn’t want to ever let anyone down. If she does, it crushes her.
Recount one of the times you were most proud of your partner?:
A: Up until Pepper was born, he was such a video gamer. It had come between us many many times, as well as affected his ability to keep a job or even leave the house. I felt like a single mother most of the time and was constantly chosen last over the Xbox. But I think Pepper being born lead to him realizing that suddenly he had a daughter to protect and care for, awakened something in him. He took his gaming gear to a pawn shop and walked away. He stepped up to the proverbial plate and really started to try. Things have only gone up from there and I am completely in awe at the giant of a man that he is becoming. But the day he gave up gaming, I was so proud of him.
D: There was this lady once that came to our house and was saying not nice things to Ashley and accusing her of something she didn’t do. At first, Ashley looked defeated and hurt, but then she pulled out her brave side and called the lady out and let her have it.
When are you most attracted to your partner?:
A: When he is lovingly and gently parenting our children, and when I catch a glimpse of him down the hall at church. (he looks SO tall and handsome in his Sunday best!)
D: When she sees how beautiful she is. She is confident and powerful. She isn’t afraid of doing anything.
What does your partner try to do & cheer you up when you aren’t feeling well?:
A: ALWAYS holds me. His hugs have healing powers. Also, he always tries to make me laugh. Once when I was feeling especially low, he came into my room wearing my lingerie. I will never be able to get that sight out of my head!
D: She sings me a special song. She is really good at singing. I wish she would show other people that quality.
What’s one of the wildest, most adventurous things you’ve ever done with your partner?:
A: We aren’t the wildest cats out there, but:
- We were at a Bear Lake Utah resort and skinny dipped in the outdoor hot tub in the middle of the night in October.
- We ran after a black bear with a group of Asian tourists in Yellowstone.
- We explored a beach along the Oregon coastline for way too long and went way too far and the tide came in. The waves were huge, the ocean was angry and the sky was dark and menacing. We got stranded in a cave and ended up practically swimming back to our car, fully clothed, clad with camera gear and a $1500 rental lens. We were pretty shaken up.
D: We were staying at a hotel and we went skinny dipping in the hot tub, in the winter, in the dark. We were scared we would be caught.
When is your partner at their best, happiest, most fulfilled?:
A: When he is serving people. When he feels like he is progressing in life. When I am happy with him and loving him. When he knows he is doing his best.
D: When she has cleaned the house, all the things on her list are done, and she is dressed up and ready to go out on a date with me.
What is one thing your partner does to make you laugh?:
A: He quotes from my favorite movies or does impressions of my favorite characters. What I love about this is that we have a totally different sense of humor. He doesn’t really get my movies and my favorite characters, but he knows that I like it and has perfected it. He can say one line or even make a face and I will crack up.
D: When she does impressions. Her Fire Marshall Bill is the best!
What is your favorite physical feature of your partners and why?:
A: I have to choose only one?!? Gosh, his eyes I guess. He has a really awesome brow(which he calls his Frankenstein forehead) and I love the way it frames his blue eyes. He has loving, kind eyes. Actually, I really like the whole top section of his head.
D: Her legs and hips. She is tall, curvy and 100% B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.
Do you have a favorite nick-name/pet name for your partner that has a story with it? If so, recount the name, the story and what it means to you.:
A: I have always called him Jones. Pirates of the Caribbean came out when we first got married and it was our favorite movie. One day I just started calling him Davy Jones and it just kind of stuck. Plus I have the biggest crush ever on Indiana Jones;) (and Han Solo, but that has nothing to do with this. Nor does Harrison Ford.)
D: Sweetie when I love her and honey when I am upset.
Describe your memories around when you realized your partner was more special to you than just a typical friend.:
A: I knew he was having a rough time with life and I asked him to go with me to run an errand one night. We drove into Idaho and I just listened to him as I drove. He had just gotten his heart broken for the second time in a year…The more I listened, the more I felt for him. I remember saying my prayers that night, I prayed for him to find the right girl, even if that meant it wasn’t me. I knew I liked him a lot, but for the first time in any of my relationships up to that point, I cared more about what was best for him than what I wanted. That’s how I knew my feelings were real and not just a crush.
D: She listened to me and really cared about what I had to say. During that time, I remember that I threw a basketball to her and my sister distracted her and it hit her in the nose.
Recount a moment your partner surprised you in way that made you love them more.:
D: When we moved to California, she got her hair cut short and she was shocked and scared that she had made a mistake. She cried a little and then said “I’ll just have to rock it!”
Why did you fall in love with your partner?:
A: I was 17. I first fell in love with his family, before I ever met him, when I became best friends with his sister. They were nutty and fun and crazy and so opposite of my quiet, reserved, mundane life. I wanted so badly for them to adopt me! He had 3 other brothers, whom I met first. Of COURSE I was trying to figure out which one I could marry! One day, I was at Dave’s parent’s house with his sister, having a sleepover. I was on the phone with my current boyfriend and the dude was being a total jerk(WORST relationship ever!). Dave was staying over and he and his brothers were chilling nearby just talking and laughing. Dave heard my conversation and started asking about it. Anyways, long story short, he talked me into breaking up with the guy and we ended up staying up till 3 am talking about everything under the sun. I think that’s when I started falling in love. Because he CARED about me, someone he didn’t even know and had just met. He has a genuine interest and care about people.
D: Because she was so different from my family and she was more mature than any other girls that were her age, or even MY age for that matter! (she’s 6 years younger than me)
What’s one endearing thing about your partner that only someone close to them would know?:
A: He is very sensitive. He needs constant affirmation from me and positive feedback. I love this about him. He’s very much like having a puppy. It’s adorable.
D: There is this thing she does with her lower lip when she is about to cry. It just pops out and it’s the cutest thing ever. She passed it to our daughter Pepper.
Why are you still in love with your partner?:
A: Because we work really hard in our relationship. We almost lost it once when the boys were really little and we will do everything we can to keep it alive. Dave is constantly loving me. He is constantly making an effort to SHOW me in MY love language(which is really hard for him!) how he loves me. We love and serve each other daily. That’s why we are so passionate about wedding photography and couples and relationships. We value family and we value LOVE. Plus, Dave is so easy to be in love with.
D: Because after 12 years, she is the one person that knows all my skeletons, my flaws, and still loves me. She is always changing to be a better person.
