If you haven’t been to Newport Avenue in San Diego’s Ocean Beach on a Wednesday afternoon, put it on your to-do list! We accidentally stumbled on the farmer’s market one day when we made a stop at my favorite herbal shop, Bountiful Herbs. The event is less of a farmer’s market and more of a colorful boho street fair of
handmade goods, herbal concoctions, and fresh organic food. And if you’re in the mood for something a little less organic, you can always grab a juicy double burger and fries from Hodad’s.
A sweet and savory aroma drifts on the breeze…a stimulating blend of acoustics percolate from multiple street musicians and the palms wave from above.Benjamin from Ghana(above), sells hand-carved wooden African wildlife made by his brother. Above-right, hand-made Rasta bracelets beg to be purchased. Succulents are plentiful and priced just right. Above-left, the peanut butter booth guy stays busy joyfully serving up the masses. Interesting characters peddle interesting goods..You never know what you may find! Above-right, Beverly of Aunt Be Botanicals proudly displays her delicious-smelling lotion:) Kids really enjoy it too. Above, I had David and our kids pose for a photo in front of a colorful hippie vibe mural on a sleepy side street…when a voice from behind me said “That was my band back in the day.” I turned around and met Pat James of the classic band, James Gang. (below) He is now president of the Ocean Beach Historical Society. He generously regaled us with the history behind James Gang, the printing company, and the multiple murals all over town. His free-spirited brother, Rich James, the heart of James Gang and an Ocean Beach icon, passed away in 2008 and the mural was formed in his honor. Read more about Rich and his brothers here and here. (and you guys, how COOL is it that we go to Ocean Beach to immerse ourselves in the culture and history and end up bumping into this guy? Seriously! I love my life! Thanks Pat!) Our sweet Pepper insisted on having Daddy “walk” her the entire time. Dave is such a great Dad! After the farmer’s market, you can head towards the beach front, where intriguing groups of vendors, hula-hoopers, yoga enthusiasts, and planking geniuses make use of the grassy area. Pets are everywhere to be found, like this cute little guy above left. A rapper (upper right) does his thing.A lonely sand castle rises from the earth and I capture it before the tide takes it away. A mother and her daughter play in the distance. The mother calls out to me “Are we in your shot? Sorry, we can move if you need us to!” Nope. You’re perfect right there. I spotted this cute couple taking a selfie so I asked if I could grab a couple of shots for them. Seriously, how adorbs are they? (Yes, I said adorbs.)The Ocean Beach Fishing Pier is a really fun walk. We enjoyed watching the surfers paddling out and catching waves as the sun fell into the ocean. We’re definitely making this a weekly outing! We hope to see you there!
