Perhaps some of you have noticed that we have been really quiet the past few weeks…very scattered blog posts, nonexistent Instagram pictures, and fuhgettabout Facebook! But for us at home, it has been ANYTHING but quiet! 3 weeks ago we began a brand new journey and started homeschooling our two boys!
This was not a decision made in haste or taken lightly, as we knew it would entail a lot of time, dedication, and PATIENCE. We have some very passionate reasons for taking this on, but there is definitely a learning curve to teaching the kids at home and maintaining our business! We also happened to have EIGHT shoots in a row and one wedding the week before we began school, so we have been swamped!
We started out pretty light, putting together our own curriculum based on each boy’s grade level…but we quickly found that we needed a bit more structure and a few more resources…so after much research, we made the choice to join a charter school homeschooling program. We are trying out a program through Inspire Charter Schools. The curriculum is a mix of online, textbook, and hands on learning, and also gives the boys plenty of opportunities for socialization through enrichment activities and also allows them each a stipend towards extracurricular such as karate and art classes or sports:) They each got their own laptop to use for the year as well.
The boys were VERY excited to receive their supplies on Monday afternoon! It was like Christmas at our house! We officially got started yesterday. To say it was a difficult day would be a total understatement. However, we made it through and we feel like we overcame a big hurdle and finally got organized. We learned to take it easy, stay flexible and be open to making changes as we go. I’m actually researching another curriculum at the moment that I suspect might be a better fit for us, I will update later:)
We’ve spent a lot of time at the library as well as in our home, learning and loving it, but we have also been teaching the boys how to work, grow a garden, study scripture and even cook on their own. I have to say, Jared makes some pretty delicious crepes with cream cheese filling! 😍
We are so ready for this challenge as it is also a blessing and we look forward to this new adventure for our family!
